What is Empathy? 

Empathy is more than just an awareness of the feelings and  emotions of others; it is a fundamental element of Emotional  Intelligence that establishes a connection between oneself and  others. It involves understanding what others are experiencing as if  those feelings were one’s own, transcending mere sympathy and  evolving into a shared emotional experience through the use of  imagination. 

Daniel Goleman identifies five key elements of empathy.

Understanding Others: This involves sensing others’ feelings and  perspectives, actively showing interest in their concerns, tuning into  emotional cues, and demonstrating sensitivity. 

Developing Others: Actively addressing the needs and concerns  of others, providing constructive feedback, rewarding strengths,  offering mentoring and coaching, and assigning tasks that promote  development. 

Having a Service Orientation: Focused on work situations, this  element emphasises prioritising customer needs, going the extra  mile for customers, understanding their requirements, and building  long-term relationships. 

Leveraging Diversity: Acknowledging and appreciating diversity,  understanding different perspectives, and fostering an inclusive  environment. 

Political Awareness: Being attuned to the political dynamics within  an organisation, understanding power relationships, and navigating  organisational structures effectively. 

Elements of Empathy 

1. Understanding Others: 

• Tune into emotional cues. 

• Show sensitivity and understand others’ perspectives. • Provide help based on an understanding of others’ needs and  feelings. 

2. Developing Others: 

• Reward and praise accomplishments. 

• Offer constructive feedback for improvement. 

• Provide mentoring, coaching, and challenging assignments. 

3. Having a Service Orientation: 

• Prioritise customer needs. 

• Go the extra mile for customers. 

• Build long-term relationships by understanding and meeting  customer requirements. 

Empathy is a skill that can be cultivated and refined, and it plays a  crucial role in personal and professional relationships. Developing  empathy contributes to creating a more compassionate and  understanding world.
